CALL FOR PAPERS

Sustainability and the Circular Economy

PLOS ONE AND PLOS SUSTAINABILITY and TRANSFORMATION

PLOS ONE and PLOS Sustainability and Transformation are calling for submissions related to sustainability and the circular economy. Submission deadline, March 1, 2023.

Mar 1 2023
SCOPE

Through the 2030 Agenda, the United Nations has established a universal call to protect the planet and improve the well-being of humanity through sustainability. One approach is by tackling the agri-food value chain within the framework of the Circular Economy. PLOS ONE and PLOS Sustainability and Transformation are calling for submissions related to sustainability and the circular economy, focusing on production models, business plans, and the contribution of global initiatives to increased sustainability in economic, environmental, and social terms. Submissions of articles related to the 9 Rs of the circular economy (rethink, refuse, reduce, reuse, re-gift, repair, rent, recycle, and rot) set within the agri-food context are strongly encouraged.

PLOS ONE welcomes submissions for research articles, systematic reviews, registered reports, protocols, submissions describing methods or tools, qualitative research, including interdisciplinary, replication studies, and negative or null results. PLOS Sustainability and Transformation welcomes research article, review, and opinion submissions of high importance and broad interest to the community of researchers, policy and decision makers to drive transformation towards sustainability of our renewable resources, economy, and society.

RESEARCH TOPICS
Food security is a global concern and essential for human development. Yet its progress has been slowed down or even reversed in many countries due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Europe. Now is a perfect time to study the agri-food chain, within the framework of circular economy, to ensure the sustainable development of agricultural food.

Circular economy aims to reduce or eliminate negative externalities of the agri-food sector while simultaneously promoting a new, sustainable production model that is crucial to achieving the UN's Sustainable development food and environmental targets. With increasing global demand for food, it is time to focus on agri-food production models and business plans that are capable of achieving sustainable food systems. Therefore, employing the 9Rs strategies for the circular economy can enhance novel policy design targeted towards achieving the goal of feeding the globe through sustainable practices.
