SCOPE

On the eve of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, PLOS ONE is calling for submissions for a new Collection on Rewilding and Restoration. As environmental pressures intensify and efforts to restore and rewild expand, there is an urgent need for a rigorous and relevant scientific evidence base to inform practical decisions and policy-making. We welcome the submission of research articles that explore the design, implementation, management, and outcomes of restoration and rewilding projects in terrestrial, freshwater, marine, and urban ecosystems that use a range of methodological approaches. We encourage submissions of interdisciplinary papers that integrate social and natural science approaches to understand, improve, and scale up restoration and rewilding in the coming decade. We would particularly like to see studies from ecoregions and voices that are underrepresented in the restoration literature.

RESEARCH TOPICS
The extent and severity of ecosystem degradation is now so great, that we need to implement restoration and rewilding globally in order to have any chance of preventing a collapse in biodiversity and the benefits people obtain from nature. Research to underpin this restoration and rewilding agenda must necessarily be interdisciplinary, for example covering ecology, geography, social science, political science and economics, which makes PLOS ONE the ideal venue for a special issue on the subject

[For] interdisciplinary research with questions that cut across several academic disciplines, the number of possible academic outlets is drastically reduced. PLOS ONE has been a great exception and publishes novel, interdisciplinary work of high quality from many different academic fields.
