CALL FOR PAPERS

Cancer Metastasis Call for Papers

PLOS ONE

Submit to PLOS ONE, the #1 publisher of cancer metastasis research. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, PLOS ONE is extending the deadline for submissions to the Cancer Metastasis collection. This unique opportunity will allow authors to continue to submit their research to this Call for Papers, including post collection launch, until December 14, 2020.

SCOPE

Cancer metastasis is responsible for 90% of all cancer deaths. The metastatic cascade is a multistep and sequential process involving cancer cell invasion, intravasation, circulation and colonization. However, our knowledge of the molecular and biochemical mechanisms that govern this process are still poorly understood. Furthermore, there is an urgent need to develop therapeutic interventions that target each part of the cascade.

In this Call for Papers, we are inviting submissions that report on the biochemical and cell biological basis of metastasis, including but not limited to cell adhesion, cell migration, cytoskeletal dynamics, cell polarity, tumour heterogeneity, tumour dormancy and the tumour microenvironment. In addition, we welcome submissions that report on disease progression and outcomes, potential biomarkers for metastatic cancer as well as the development of anti-metastatic therapies, including drug development, drug delivery and personalized medicine. In this collection, we aim to highlight the diversity of research that is being conducted in the cancer metastasis field, including studies that focus on basic and translational research.

RESEARCH TOPICS
While great strides have been made to understand and therapeutically target the basic processes driving cancer development, immunology and growth, our understanding of the complex process of metastasis remains comparatively vague. The advent of new technologies in mechanobiology, cell adhesion, and drug development in addition to new preclinical models of cancer such as cancer organoids has initiated rapid expansion of research on metastasis. We intend for the Collection to trigger new insight and new directions in thinking about what drives metastasis and approaches to block it.

Cancer metastasis is a complex series of processes ranging from intravasation, dissemination and extravasion, to name a few steps. Unfortunately, metastatic cancer remains the most common cause of all cancer deaths. I am excited to be a part of this project to help highlight the diversity of research across many disciplines and bring together a selection of quality reports in this area. Research addressing basic science mechanism, identification of potential biomarkers, understanding tumor microenvironment and translational areas such as in the area of novel therapeutics are examples of the breadth of topics. This is a fascinating field with many questions including why some specific cancers are more likely to spread to specific organs. I look forward to working with PLOS ONE on this mission.
