SCOPE
Influenza is an important cause of death and morbidity globally. While vaccination is the best way to prevent influenza virus infection, other pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical strategies can prevent or mitigate the impact of influenza on individuals and the spread within populations. Influenza viruses are continually evolving, posing challenges to vaccination strategies and vaccine development.
This PLOS ONE call for papers aims to create a collection of research articles that focuses on influenza prevention on every level. We welcome submissions reporting in vitro, translational, and clinical studies; disease and immunity modelling; as well as new approaches to influenza prevention.
RESEARCH TOPICS
- Disease prevention
- Vaccine design
- Vaccine efficacy
- Outbreak prediction
- Social and behavioral practices related to prevention

Efficacy of government:
• Community preparedness
• Prevention Programs
Influenza remains a major public health threat with both seasonal epidemics and uncommon pandemics. Prevention, through both vaccination and non-pharmaceutical interventions, remains the most effective counter to a virus for which there are limited therapeutic options. Influenza vaccination has been a public health priority for over half a century, yet vaccine effectiveness is limited by the need to predict circulating strains well in advance of influenza season, continued viral evolution, and vaccine availability and uptake. Strategies to mitigate the global burden of influenza morbidity and mortality will benefit from active disease surveillance, community and government preparedness, improved therapeutics and vaccines, increased access to available vaccines and therapeutics, and improved uptake of available vaccines.
