SCOPE
PLOS ONE is delighted to announce a Call for Papers across all areas of Open Soft Robotics Research. This Collection is aimed at providing an inclusive platform for researchers from a broad range of disciplines, such as Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Computer science, Rehabilitation Medicine and interdisciplinary sciences.
In particular, we welcome new solutions that have the potential to favourably impact the development of future soft robots, including works focusing on extending their durability, reliability, reproducibility and resilience in challenging environments.
RESEARCH TOPICS
- Synthesis and development of new materials
- Materials design
- Control and automation of soft robots
- Soft actuators and sensors
- Manipulators
- Biomimetics
- Soft aerial robotics
- Evolutionary robotics
- Artificial intelligence and deep learning
- Software and programming environments
- Soft robot applications
Conventional industrial robots with rigid actuation technology have made great progress for humans in the fields of automation assembly and manufacturing. With an increasing number of robots needing to interact with humans and unstructured environments, there is a need for soft robots made of soft materials capable of sustaining large deformation while inducing little pressure or damage when maneuvering through confined spaces. However, design, fabrication, modeling and control of soft actuators, sensors and robots have great challenges because of the inherent large nonlinear behaviors of soft materials. On the other hand, these challenges also provide exciting and promising opportunities for scientists, and multidisciplinary integrations are required to create a new generation of wearable and assistive soft robots that can be used in the real world.

GUEST EDITORS
Like many scientists I am a strong supporter of transparency at all stages of the publication process. I also believe that a comprehensive understanding of a subject relies on knowing what is and what is not. Consequently, the negative stuff is really important.
