Aging in Human Health and Disease
Advances in modern medicine mean many people can expect to live far longer than in previous generations. According to the World Health Organization, the number of people aged 60 years and older will increase to 1.4 billion by 2030 and 2.1 billion by 2050*. At a global level, the growing aging population currently presents a challenge to health and social care systems, and is expected to increase significantly.
In this collection, PLOS One highlights multidisciplinary research in the area of aging, including research articles and study protocols exploring quality of life in geriatric and palliative care populations, creation of a healthy aging biobank, challenges in accessing care and health monitoring, mental health in aged populations, cognitive changes in aging, and the impact of older age in a range of diseases.
