Diabetes Prevention

Curated Collections

Diabetes is a global problem, with recent estimates of a staggering 410 million people with diabetes mellitus in 2013. The high risk of disabling and life-threatening complications, and the enormous individual and societal costs associated with them, demonstrate the urgent need for more effective approaches to prevention. In this Collection, we feature PLOS articles that focus on the prevention of diabetes. Many of the papers are from the Special Issue in PLOS Medicine - guest edited by Prof. Nick Wareham and Prof. William Herman - and focus on lifestyle changes that can elicit reductions in diabetes incidence, as well as how taxes can reduce the number of sugary foods purchased. Additional papers, published in other PLOS journals, are also featured in this collection. Combined, these articles bring together the key areas of early detection, treatment and education on this important disease.
